Viola d'amore Concerto in D major, RV 392 (Vivaldi, Antonio). The viola d'amore is an odd instrument. It's an odd instrument today and it was an odd instrument in Vivaldi's day. But Vivaldi was apparently so enamored of the instrument that he wrote eight concertos for it, all of which Rachel Barton Pine plays on the present recording, accompanied by Ars Antigua. How unusual is the viola d'amore?

Misc. Notes | From the Coutan archives. Paul Coutan studied this edition under Paul Bazelaire's tutelage, but only the penultimate sonata. Accordingly it has been scanned also in color for the markings to stand out. Introductory notes (French only) by Henry Expert who indicates that the editors received communication of the 1740 edition through the hands of Henry Prunières. |
