Spotify In Winamp

AOL’s recently dropped Winamp music player may yet be saved – the software is still available for download despite the supposed December 20 retirement date, and rumours grow regarding its sale alongside the Shoutcast music service that should at least secure Winamp’s short-term future.

In the meantime, if you’re a Spotify Premium user who yearns to access your Spotify music through a Winamp-like interface, then your search is over thanks to the release of Spotiamp 0.2.

Spotiamp has been developed by the Swedish Spotify office in homage to Winamp – although developed in-house, however, the app is unofficial. Also available in portable form, the software closely mimics the Winamp look and functionality, but you will need a fully paid-up Spotify Premium account to use it.

Archive plugins for the great Winamp media player, download Winamp plugins for free on WinampHeritage.com. You have to have Spotify Premium in order to make use of the app – perhaps Spotify believes that geeks' love of Winamp will be the final reason they need to pony up $10 a month for the service. Spotify is a digital music service that gives you access to millions of songs. We and our partners use cookies to personalize your experience, to show you ads based on your interests, and for measurement and analytics purposes.

Browse and listen to your Spotify Premium music collection through Spotiamp.

Once installed, log into your Spotify account and you’ll have access to your playlists, radio stations, suggested music and a search tool, all through a small and fast player. It works in a similar way to Winamp – there’s a small main player window plus a number of add-on windows, including EQ, playlist and album art, you can show or hide as required.

Spotiamp also bundles a Shoutcast server, allowing you to pipe your Spotify music to any Shoutcast-enabled devices you might own. Once enabled, simply point your devices to http://127.0.0.1:5010/play.pls, replacing 127.0.0.1 with your PC’s IP address.

The connection to Winamp goes deeper, with users able to transfer their visualisation plugins and skins from Winamp into Spotiamp – simply copy the relevant files into freshly created plugins and skins folders inside the main Spotiamp directory.

Spotiamp 0.2 and Spotiamp Portable 0.2 are both available now as freeware downloads for PCs running Windows XP or later. A Spotify Premium account is required to log in and use the software.

Spotify released an ironic homage to Winamp, prematurely anticipating its demise, which, if and when it comes, will be largely due to the rise of streaming services like Spotify.

  • Winampify aims at providing an OS-like interface to interact with Spotify in the browser. Artists, albums and tracks are all rendered as files and folders and can easily be manipulated and played in the Winamp re-implementation Webamp.
  • In honour of Winamp, Spotify has made a tribute app available that is fully compatible with songs from the music-streaming service. The user interface is lifted directly from the classic Winamp.

Here’s what’s going on.

AOL announced that it was shutting down its Nullsoft products Winamp and ShoutCast. Winamp is a desktop/mobile app that plays locally stored music files. ShoutCast is a streaming-audio server that enables and hosts thousands of independent Internet radio stations. December 20 was the cutoff date, according to AOL. That was Friday.

Rumors abounded that Winamp and/or Spotify were on the market, and an imminent buyers was in talks, forestalling the shutdowns.

Today, the Winamp site is still up and Winamp downloads are still available (although not the paid Pro version).

Meanwhile, Spotify staged some PR cleverness by releasing a Windows desktop app that looks exactly like classic Winamp. It is infelicitously called Spotiamp. More an homage to Winamp than a replacement, Spotiamp lets you play your Spotify playlists. It works only for Spotify Premium subscribers.

The design mimicry is excellent, making Spotiamp confusing as anything if you’re running Winamp on the same screen.

Spotiamp also enables ShoutCast server streaming. that doesn’t mean you can listen to ShoutCast staions, but it does mean you can stream your Spotify playlists, viaSpotiamp, to any device (like a Sonos WiFi speaker) that recognizes the ShoutCast server. for as long as, you know, ShoutCast stays alive. Which it is, as of this post.

Despite its PR ploy, Spotiamp is actually a welcome little product. Used as a lightweight playback app when you don’t want to load up the full Spotify desktop program, it works beautifully for basic listening, when you don’t want to lean in to manage the lists.
