Let’s break it down into a few basic ones that you can use in your homeschool to get started.
The Wrong Paint Brushes

I went through a journey of figuring out what I didn’t want, and I’m happy to save you the trouble from going through the same purchases.
First, let’s talk about the brushes that come with those adorable craft kits. As a new parent you might pick one up in a moment of weakness, or you might get inundated with them at your child’s birthday party. Throw that thing away, or repurpose it for another crafty purpose. Convincing that brush to put paint on the paper in a decent way is never going to happen.
Second, brushes that are longer than your five year old’s arm…probably not a good fit. If you’re searching on Amazon, make sure to pay attention to the length of the handle.
Not to mention, having large paint brushes encourages sword fights in the house or classroom.
Or to run around with them and use them as torches.
My Favorite Paint Brushes for Kids
Hands down, the green Royal Brush Big Kids Choice brushes are our favorite all-purpose paint brush for kids.
Easily purchased on amazon, the set comes with 12, which is perfect for only a couple of kids, or a large homeschooling family and all of their friends (and when you lose one or two). These brushes are loved by art teachers and art studios as well. We use them daily, and they’ve held up wonderfully, and are easy to clean.
There are two other types of brushes you might want to consider.
First, a wider brush for painting the background. Kids can quickly get hand fatigue from painting an entire background, especially on larger paper. This can be frustrating when you are so excited to have your kids paint, but they are too tired to continue.
Also, wider and flatter brushes are wonderful for creating painted paper, which you can later use in collages.
This set by Royal Brush comes with a larger brush and is perfect for kids, or you can pick up a set of mixed brushes at a local craft store. Look for ones similar to the white one in the picture below.
Second, a smaller round brush for detail work, especially for older kids. Nothing says unhappy like an older kid who wants to paint only one part of their dinosaur but the brush is too large for the space.
I love this all purpose 12-piece set by Mudder. It comes with enough smaller round brushes for the entire family, and they’re inexpensive. The brush size differences won’t be noticed by the kids when they’re younger, but they will have a nice range to play with as they get older.

Art Supplies for Toddlers You Shouldn’t Live Without!
Best Paint Brushes
1.Flip & Doodle Easel Desk – This easel flips down into a desk and also features storage underneath for some art supplies.
2. 10 Drawer Organizing Cart – This little cart comes in handy all the time! I love the size of it because I keep it in our little hallway closet and whenever I need it I can just wheel out to where we’re crafting.
3. Waterproof Art Smock – Help with the mess by using a waterproof art smock. I love the fun designs on these ones and they’re great quality! I’ve had ours for over two years (with tons of use) and still looks new!
4. Spill Proof Paint Cups – Another way to help with the mess when you’re dealing with beginner painters is by using spill proof paint cups. These keep the paint in the cups and also keeps the paint from drying out.
5. Tissue Paper – Tissue paper is great to have on hand for crafts, we use them the most for our sun catcher crafts. They’re also great for practicing scissor skills and cutting up to use for collages.
6. Do-A-Dot Markers – These are toddler must haves! We use these for just about anything from practicing to count and the kids love stamping these all over the paper to create their own pictures.
7. Easel Art Paper – Constructions paper and card stock paper are also great, but I usually just use our roll of easel paper because it’s a lot bigger and there’s more room for the kids to create.
8. Washable Finger Paint – These finger paints are non-toxic and washable so they’re perfect for your toddlers sensory painting activity!
9. Pip-Squeaks Washable Crayola Markers – Of course any washable markers will do, I personally love the size of the pip-squeaks for my little toddler’s hands!
10. Jumbo Paint Brushes – It’s important to have a good set of paintbrushes that are easy for little hands to hold. For toddlers you’ll want ones that have a larger tip so that they’re easier to grasp.
11. Popsicle Sticks – These can be used for collages or just about any other type of kids craft. We’ve made animals and a lot of seasonal crafts with these.
12. Googly Eyes – We tend to do a lot of animal crafts so these are always great to have on hand and are easier to glue on rather than drawing eyes.
13. Clear Contact Paper – We include contact paper in so many of our art projects, one of our favorites include suncatcher crafts. Here are some Colorful Suncatcher Crafts to get you started.
14. Glue Sticks – I started out having the kids use the purple Elmer’s glue sticks because they were easier to use and because it’s purple it’s great for beginners so they can see where they’ve applied the glue.

16. Washable Kids’ Paint – When picking a basic kids’ paint always go for a non-toxic and washable brand. Crayola has always been our favorite.
